THE EFFECT OF ETHANOL EXTRACTS OF TETRAPLEURA TETRAPTERA ON INFLAMMATORY MARKERS IN CCL4 INDUCED TOXICITY .

ABSTRACT

This study shows the effects of the administration of different doses of ethanol extracts of Tetrapleura tetraptera on inflammatory markers (IL-6, IL-IB and TNF-alpha) in male wistar albino rats induced with carbon tetrachloride. In this animal study, 25 Albino Wistar rats were separated into five experimental groups. Groups 1, 2, and 3 represented the basal control, negative control, and positive control respectively. The rats were properly fed and left to acclimatize for 2 weeks. Group 1 rats were neither induced nor given any treatment, Group 2 was induced with CCL4 without any treatment, and Group 3 was induced with carbon tetrachloride and received sillymarin standard treatment. Groups 4 and 5 were induced and administered ethanol extracts of Tetrapleura tetraptera at dosages of 250mg and 500mg respectively. The treatment was administered intraperitoneally over a 14-day period. The primary focus of this study was to assess the impact of Tetrapleura tetraptera extract on the expression of IL-6, IL-1B, and TNF alpha, with an emphasis on its anti-inflammatory potential. The results indicated that there was no significant difference (p>0.05) in IL-1B levels in all experimental groups compared to the control. Interestingly, there was a significant difference (p<0.05) in TNF alpha and IL-6 expression in all groups when compared to the basal control, suggesting a potential anti-inflammatory effect of the Tetrapleura tetraptera extract.
