ABSTRACT

This study examines the effect of entrepreneurial characteristics on business performance in Nigeria, the objectives of the study examine the effect of entrepreneurial characteristics on SMEs performance, determine therelationship 6 between Entrepreneurial characteristic and business performance and the challenges militating against entrepreneurs in ensuring performance of business. Four researcher questions was raised to guide the study. The study population consists of selected small and medium enterprise within University of Benin community in Benin City, Edo State Nigeria. The population include staff in restaurants, grocery shops, bars, lounge, and boutique. The sample size consisted of 120 participants through a purposive random sampling techniques, questionnaire was used as the research instrument. the collected data was analyzed using frequency count and percentages, chi square was used for Hypothesis testing. From the data analysis it was reveal that passion is the driving force of an entrepreneur and that passionate entrepreneurs are likely to succeed in their business, it is concluded that for an entrepreneur to be successful in the expansion of his or her business, he or she must be able to meet the goals and objectives that have been established, be open-minded and quick to pick up new skills, prefer to concentrate on business opportunities rather than financial rewards, be willing to take risks for the expansion of the business, and possess a high level of competency.
