ABSTRACT
Most Ophthalmic drugs used by most optometrist and eye care professionals has a long term effect which includes dry eye syndrome, allegies etc. the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of TOPICAL Diclofenoc sodium 0.1% on tears secretion and stability on healthy young subjects. This experimental study was carried out using fifty (50) healthy selected by convenience. The tear flowrate was obtained using a Schimers strip test before, 30 minutes and 60 minutes after instillation same was also done for tear breakup time (NIBUT) before and 30 nminutes and 60 minutes after instillation. Data obtained was analysed using unpaired T-test and descriptive statistics. The tear mean secretion and non-invasive tear breakup time at baseline were 25.400±6.87mm/5mins and 27.86±9.14secs respectively, it was statistically significance (p=0.000). Similarly gender related and age difference in mean tear secretion and NIBUT at baseline was not significant. Results in this study shows that topical Diclofenac sodium 0.1% significantly reduced the effect of tear secretion and stability after 30 minutes and 60 minutes of drug instillation, hence topical Diclofenac sodium 0.1% should be used with caution especially for individuals with dry eye syndrome or predisposing individual.
