ABSTRACT

Indiscriminate long-term pesticides use or over-application of pesticides could have severe effects on soil ecosystems, which may lead to alteration and/or erosion of beneficial soil microflora. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of pesticide contaminated soil on E. coli and determine the microbial load of the soil pre and post application of pesticide. Four (4) samples were collected from the University of Benin. The soil samples were gotten from four points using a quadrant. The study showed fluctuations in THBC and coliform counts over the course of 28 days, with some variations in the control samples. On day 0, the THBC count ranged from 4.69 to 4.40 log10cfu/ml for both DDVP and haloxyfop R methyl estertreated samples. Meanwhile, the coliform count for these samples ranged from 4.24 to 3.57 log10cfu/ml. Moving to day 14, the control sample had a THBC count ranging from 3.82 to 3.41 log10cfu/g, and the coliform count ranged from 4.25 to 3.57 log10cfu/g. These counts suggest a decrease in THBC and an increase in coliform count compared to day 0.
