THE EFFECT OF CELLGEVITY ON LIVER FUNCTION IN MALE WISTAR RATS

ABSTRACT

High fructose intake is suspected to be causally linked to metabolic syndrome disorders; this study assessed the effect of cellgevity on liver function in male Wistar rats fed a high fructose diet. Cellgevity is as a premier antioxidant supplement formula developed by Max International and is widely used by a large population. Antioxidants play a crucial role in neutralizing harmful free radicals in the body, and supplements like Cellgevity claim to support overall health by providing a potent blend of antioxidant ingredients. Twenty (20) male Wistar rats with an average weight of 200.0±1.0g each were divided into four groups of five. The rats were fed ad-libitum during the entire duration of the experiment. A basal diet of standard pelleted grower’s mash was given to the control group (group 1), while other groups received 60% fructose diet and 10% fructose water. Treatments with Atorvastatin and Cellgevity for groups 3 and 4 respectively were administered using an oro-gastric gavage. The weekly weight, daily feed consumed and feed efficiency were determined using standard methods. A comprehensive biochemical assessment of liver function parameters was carried out and the data were analyzed using the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Turkey’s test of significance. The high fructose diet fed rats had an elevated AST, ALT, ALT, Total bilirubin and unconjugated bilirubin levels and also a decreased conjugated bilirubin level. Furthermore, Atorvastatin improved conjugated bilirubin levels and caused a decrease in AST, ALT, ALP, total bilirubin and unconjugated bilirubin levels. However, Cellgevity mitigates high fructose diet induced Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) by causing reduction in AST, ALT, ALP, total bilirubin and unconjugated bilirubin levels as well as an increased conjugated bilirubin level, where it showed more efficacy than atorvastatin. The result of this study indicates that both atorvastatin and cellgevity have potential hepatoprotective effects against liver damage induced by a high fructose diet. Cellgevity particularly demonstrated promising results, surpassing Atorvastatin in some aspects of liver function regulation.
