ABSTRACT
The 2023 general elections in Nigeria marked a turning point in the country's electoral history, with the introduction of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS). This technological innovation, designed to address the challenges of voter impersonation, multiple voting, and result manipulation, has been widely hailed for its potential to enhance electoral integrity. This study examines the effects of BVAS on reducing election malpractice in the 2023 general election. The analysis draws upon a comprehensive literature review, election observation reports, and interviews with key stakeholders to assess the effectiveness of BVAS in achieving its objectives. The findings indicate that BVAS has played a significant role in curbing election malpractice, particularly in reducing voter impersonation and multiple voting. However, the study also identifies areas where BVAS can be further improved to enhance its effectiveness in future elections. These areas include improving the training of election officials, enhancing public awareness of BVAS, addressing potential technological vulnerabilities, and strengthening the legal framework surrounding election malpractice. The study concludes by providing recommendations for maximizing the effectiveness of BVAS and promoting a culture of electoral integrity in Nigeria.
