ABSTRACT
Aspartame is one of the most widely used artificial sweeteners globally. Data concerning acute toxicity of aspartame is controversial, and knowledge on its chronic effect is limited. The present study investigatedthe effect of aspartame on the electrolyte in urine and blood. 37 male wistar rats, weighing an average weight of 110g each, were randomly divided into one control group and four experimental groups. The control group received only drinking water, while the experimental groups were orally administered with aspartame at a concentration of 45g and 22.5g b.wt in 500ml of distilled water and zero coke for 16 weeks. Results showed that administration of concentrated Zero coke caused a significant increase in serum concentration of Sodium when compared with the control group while there was a significant decrease in the concentration of bicarbonate and potassium when compared with control group. Results also showedthat administration of concentrated aspartame caused a significant increase in urinary concentration of sodium and bicarbonatewhen compared to control groups while there was a significant decrease in urinary concentration of potassium. It can be concluded from these observations that aspartame significantly alters serum and urinary electrolyte levels, thus low consumption in adults is recommended. Future experimental studies can offer further insight to the implication of prolonged dietary consumption of aspartame.
