ABSTRACT
Syzygium aromaticum is a member of the myrtaceae family and commonly known as clove. It is used as spice, preservative and has many medicinal properties such as aphrodisiac, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-oxidant and Neuroprotective effects. This study was aimed at investigating the effect of aqueous extract of Syzygium aromaticum (clove buds) on the cerebellum of adult Wistar rats.
Twenty adult Wistar rats weighing 180g to 220g, were randomized into four groups of five rats each. Group A received 1ml of distilled water daily, group B received 250mg/kg body weight of the extract, group C received 500mg/kg body weight of the extract, group D received 1000mg/kg body weight of the extract. All administration was done using an orogastric tube, for a period of two weeks, the body weight of the rats were recorded daily.
The parameters accessed include neuro-behavioural activities (rearing, ambulation, grooming and immobility) via open field test and histoarchitecture of the cerebellum using Haematoxylin and Eosin staining technique. Data was analyzed using SPSS/IBM statistical package version 20 and the statistical method employed was ANOVA.
