ABSTRACT
Pregnancy involves the physiological generation of reactive oxygen species which results from a variety of developmental processes ranging from oocyte maturation to luteolysis and embryo implantation, excessive production of these reactive oxygen species and the loss of balance between production and removal may disrupt these processes leading to reproductive failure (oxidative stress). This study investigated and compared the effects of aqueous and hexane extracts of the fruits xylopia aethiopica on oxidative stress biomakers in apparently healthy pregnant wistar rats. Methods:The procedures involved the extraction of the aqueous and hexane extracts from the fruits of xylopia aethiopica which were used for this study. Thirty five rats weighing 140 - 210g were used for this study. The rats were divided into seven groups (n=5). The control group, Groups 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Groups 1, 2 and 3 were administered aqueous extract . Groups 4, 5 and 6 were administered oil extract. Control group were given distilled water ad libitum. Group 1, 2 and 3 were administered 25omg/kg, 500mg/kg and 1000mg/kg respectively while group 4 were administered 0.25ml/kg, 0.5ml/kg and 0.1ml/kg respectively.
