SUMMARY
This research reveals the heavy metal concentration found in Ipomoea aquatica and Amaranthus hybridus, the heavy metal concentration in different insect species and survey of different insect morphospecies across ten (10) sampling sites in Otofure dumpsites. The survey of insect species in Otofure dumpsites revealed a total number of twenty-one (21) morphospecies across ten (10) sampling sites. The heavy metal sampled in Ipomoea aquatica and Amaranthus hybridus includes, cadmium, chromium, lead, manganese, nickel and zinc and all had varying concentrations. The presence of these heavy metals could be due to the fact they held to fight against herbivores, pest and pathogens present in the dumpsites. The concentration of heavy metals in plants may be attributed to the waste dumpsite of the study area. Similar work by Ademoronti (2000) showed that plants accumulate considerable amount of heavy metal in roots and leaves. Anikwe and Nwobodo, (2002) and Amusan et al. (2005) reported that high concentrations of heavy metals in plants grown in waste dumpsite soils. The level of concentrations of these metals in soil and plant harvested from the waste dumpsite raises environmental concern. Consequently, people depending on these as their source of food are indirectly ingesting heavy metals. Animals in grazing pasture may also ingest considerable amounts directly as soil and materials coatings the leaves and are thus exposed to these even without direct plant uptake. Therefore, there is high risk on the environment and health association the use of both active and abandoned municipal waste dumpsite for food crop production. Alloway and Davies (2007) and Grant and Dobbs (2008) reported that plant grown on soils possessing enhance metals concentration have increased heavy metal ion content. The uptake of metals ions has been shown to be influenced by the metal species and plant parts (Juste and Mench, 1992).
