SUMMARY
This project tested and showed the possibility of implementing a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) based Voltage/VAR Optimization (VVO) system in an industrial load network such as this case study: the University of Benin (UNIBEN) electrical distribution network. Majority of the critical data on most major load parameters in the distribution network were extracted from Odiase, 2013. This included parameters such as transformer KVA ratings, load power factor, frequency, real, reactive and apparent power ratings, line and phase currents and voltages. The optimal capacitor placements were obtained using genetic algorithm on ETAP simulation software. As a result, the design of the SCADA based VVO system for the UNIBEN distribution network is based on the use of switched capacitors and a Remote Tap Changer Controller (RTCC) designed to be controlled from the SCADA system.
