ABSTRACT
The aim of this project is to design and construct an electronic billboard which scrolls the required information to be disseminated for public view. This project is built around the Atmegal16L microcontroller and the LED matrix display.
This feet was achieved using a programming integrated microcontroller the Atmega16L and other integrated circuit and discrete components such as capacitors, resistors, voltage regulators current sinkers. The microcontroller was programmed using assembly language.
The matrix is designed by sending data to the rows while triggering the correct column pins to light the desired LEDs for that particular row. If scanning is done at a fast rate, fast enough to eliminate flickers the LEDs will glow in an orderly manner displaying each character string. The intensity of the glow depends on the amount of current been sank by individual LEDs. The observer tends to see a neatly ordered character string scrolling past. This is made possible by the persistence of vision, which is the theory of the human retina’s ability to retain an image for about a tenth of a second.
The results of the tests on the display board was satisfactory and scrolled the required message: “WELCOME TO THE VICE CHANCELLOR’S OFFICE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN”.
