A 2010 United Nations study reports that there are 245 million widows world-wide, and that they and their children form 15% of the world population, with 115 million of them living in extreme poverty. The world has turned its back to them as if they were a menace to society, a burden, a nuisance, outcasts, and rejects. They are discriminated against, stigmatised, and abused. Their land, possessions, and sometimes even their children are taken away from them by in-laws.
