THE COST EFFECTIVENESS OF REARING GIANT AFRICAN LAND SNAILS

ABSTRACT

The research was aimed at examining the cost effectivnesss and constraints of rearing African Giant Land Snail in Benin City to determine start up cost and discuss the affordable way to rear Africa Giant land snails. A total of 20 questionnaires were distributed to several farmers in Benin City to collate data which was used to analyses the profit or loss of rearing African giant land snails in Benin City, from the collation of data collected it has shown that rearing of Africa Giant Land Snails is a very lucrative business and helps in generating of more profits or revenue when the management practices, sales and distribution is properly handled. The business of snail production required low capital investment and was highly profitable with gross margin and net profit per snail respectively. The result further showed that stock size, labor cost and educational level were significant factors influencing revenue from snail production. It was also concluded that since snail production required low capital investment, low income earners could comfortably embark on it and in view of the high profit level of the business, it could be a veritable enterprise for uplifting the living standard of its producers and advance the economy of the nation.
