ABSTRACT
The study established the correlation between human kinetics curriculum content and related career options. To guide the study, five research questions were raised, four were answered directly and one was hypothesized and tested at 0.05 alpha level.
The study adopted the correlational research design. The population of the study was 182 undergraduate students of the University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State. The sample size of the study was 182, as a census population was used. An instrument was used, titled: “Human Kinetics Undergraduates Curriculum Content and Related Career Options Questionnaire (HKUCCRCOQ)”. The instrument was validated by the researcher’s supervisor, and two other experts in the Department of Human Kinetics and Sports Science. The cronbach alpha statistics was used to establish the reliability of the instrument and the r-value of 0.85 was obtained. Data were analysed using percentage, mean, standard deviation, and simple linear regression.
The findings revealed that majority of the respondents chose sports medicine as their preferred social service in Human Kinetics curriculum content; the Human Kinetics content in universities lack adequacy in scope in relation to its career options and also it is teacher education biased; the most prevalent factor influencing undergraduates’ social services preference in Human Kinetics was the students’ interest, while the least factor was their parents; the students agreed to all listed career options in Human Kinetics programme adequately preparing students for its related career options, however, not much could be said of sports engineering and sports medicine. The tested hypothesis revealed that there was a positive weak relationship between the predictor (PE/Human Kinetics curriculum content) and the dependent variable (PE/Human Kinetics related career options). Also, there was no significant relationship between Human Kinetics undergraduate curriculum content and related career options. It was concluded that there exist several career options in Human Kinetics; and that ensuring adequacy of the curriculum could provoke students’ interest in pursuing a career in this discipline of knowledge. It was recommended that a balanced curriculum of human kinetics should be situated at all educational levels, as it would go a long way in enhancing sports development, participation and ultimately undergraduate students as well as individual’s interest in taking up a professional career in Human Kinetics.
