ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to provide a thorough contrastive lexicographic analysis of greetings and food terms in the English and Esan languages, to look at the differences between the named semantic fields in the two languages, and to determine the difficulties that these differences present for second language learners. A vital part of language and culture, greetings and food phrases represent social interaction and culinary customs. However, there aren't any comprehensive comparative lexicons in Esan or English that are specifically targeted at this field. This study fills this vacuum by examining the semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic differences between the two languages in terms of greetings and food phrases, as well as by cataloging and examining the unique vocabulary and cultural nuances within this field.theoretical framework for this study is anchored on contrastive analysis, Sapir-Whorf hypothesis and contrastive lexicography principles. Data collection involved a combination of qualitative methods, including literature review, observation and interviews with native speakers of English and Esan language. The collected data will be analyzed using linguistics tools and techniques, such as semantic analysis and comparative linguistics. ix The findings will be presented in a comprehensive contrastive lexicographic analysis, highlighting the similarities and differences in greetings and food terms vocabulary between the two languages.
