THE CHALLENGES OF TEACHING AND LEARNING ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN ADULT LITERACY CENTRES IN BENIN METROPOLIS

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the challenges of teaching and learning English Language in adult literacy centres in Benin metropolis.  Four (4) research questions were raised to guide the study.

A sample of this study comprises of one hundred and twenty (120) respondents drawn from three (3) selected adult literacy centres in Benin metropolis. The simple random sampling technique was used in the selection of the respondents. The major instrument used for this study was the questionnaire. The questionnaire was designed and validated by the supervisor and other two experts in the department of Adult and Non-formal Education, Faculty of Education University of Benin. Data were analysed using descriptive statistical techniques such as tables, frequencies counts, and simple percentages

 Findings of the study revealed that the teaching methods that are mostly used in teaching English language in adult literacy centres in Benin metropolis are; lecture method and simulation. It was further revealed that adult facilitators/instructors usually focus on adult learners’ life experience, use visually stimulating materials for teaching and ensure learners are involved in the process. It was therefore recommended that the providers of adult literacy programmes should ensure they provide a conducive environment that has good climate for effective teaching and learning. Such environment should be safe, adult learners treated fairly by facilitators and happy to be in school as well as feel they are a part of the school. It was further recommended that adult facilitators should ensure that they adopt teaching methods that will carry adult learners along in the course of teaching and learning because adult learners who come to the learners centres come along with them myriads experience that will help to aid effective teaching and learning
