THE CHALLENGE OF PUBLIC SECTOR INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA

Abstract

This study examines the challenges of public sector infrastructural development in Nigeria: a case study of road maintenance in Delta State. This study adopted the survey design on the bases of which the questionnaires was administered to a sample of one hundred (100) respondents. The data sourced was analysed using percentage statistical technique. The result shows that there is a significant relationship between poor revenue generation in public sector and road maintenance in Delta State. The result revealed that there is a significant relationship between inadequate public sector revenue and infrastructural development in Delta State. The result also shows that there is a significant relationship between road maintenance and safety in travelling in Delta State. The study recommends that policy should be designed to ensure that a fair proportion of revenue received from federation account is allocated to the funding of capital expenditure. Efforts should also be intensified in the efficient generation of internal revenues in order to increase its size and reduce associated costs of collection. Delta State government should give more consideration to the rehabilitation of the infrastructure, assign substantial budget to rehabilitate the infrastructure in order the people live in distance places get an opportunity to develop their economy. The government should encourage private building companies to build roads and came up with rules and regulation to prevent default risk. Beyond improving tax laws, there should be provision of good infrastructure in terms of quality and quantity as it seems to motivate and encourage tax payers. It is important that the government ensures that whatever measures that needs to be taken to revamp and maintain infrastructure, thereby creating better the quality and availability, should be carried out. In order to ensure greater local development and lower production costs for the sector. It is necessary that government should put measures in place to curb corruption in the system, so that, the money disbursed for infrastructural development is properly channeled. An inspection is necessary to further ensure that the works constructions, etc) are done right, to make the infrastructure more reliable. This will equally boost output of the local economy.
