SUMMARY

From the various findings in the study, it shows that several factors create deprivation for the youth in Edo State and these depriving factors pushes them into irregular migration to mostly Europe and the Americas. The study has been able to establish that the youth in Edo State are relatively deprived of the means of actualizing their lives aspirations, as there is little or no sign of developmental and empowerment opportunities for the youth in the state. The dearth of employment generating industries 150 and factories, lack of the enabling environment for self-empowerment and inadequate social welfare schemes for the youth in the state have been revealed. The study confirmed the high level of irregular migration particularly among the youth in the state and found that a major implication of this development is that it has resulted in the death of several young Nigerians, as hundreds of these able bodied youth have been reported death during transit in several locations that include the desert, transit countries, the Mediterranean Sea, and even in destination countries, where they are not given adequate attention and social welfare as a result of their irregular status. Besides, several youths in transit and destination countries have been subjected to numerous pains, harsh labour, sexual exploitation, organ harvesting, slavery, forced prostitution, xenophobia, racism and several abuses. And for the sending states, the issue has created battered image, high rate of brain drain and dearth of professionals, lack of respect and dignity among comity of nations, and struggles in repatriating, rehabilitating and resettling returnees of irregular migration. However, certain benefits accrues when irregular migrants become successful against all odds, and sends back migration remittances that has helped in improving lives and society in the state, as well as acquire knowledge, skills and certification from their destination countries.
