ABSTRACT
This study has highlighted the critical role that the Catholic Church has played in shaping the history of Asaba city. However, as we end, it can be seen that the existence of the Catholic Church has had profound effects on Asaba in diverse aspects ranging from its cultures, norms and traditions through its educational facilities and health centres. This study has revealed a number of striking elements about the role played by the Catholic Church in the evolutionary process of Asaba. In this regard, the arrival of Catholicism brought about massive modifications in cultural practices, religious matters, and social codes. Asaba has changed culturally with most people embracing Christianity instead of traditional customs and rituals. The catholic church has established schools that have contributed greatly towards development of a more learned society since Asaba is more literate than other states in Africa. This commitment of the Church toward education has enabled personal development and created prospects for employment among residents. The Church has also played a major role in improving public health by establishing hospitals and dispensaries amongst other initiatives in the healthcare sector. The Catholic church has provided much needed support to the underprivileged children, the disadvantaged and the aged through different organizations and projects as a means of attending to social welfare needs in Asaba.
