ABSTRACT
Contact lens wear can increase the risk of microbial infection. Although Eyelids and conjunctiva harbor a significant number of bacteria and occasionally fungi from the external environment and are called normal flora, which play an important role in normal body functions and health by secreting antibiotics and chemical mediators to maintain surface homeostasis and immunoregulation. This study was carried out to assess the ocular microbial flora and sensitivity pattern before and during contact lens wear. An observational cross- sectional study was carried out on 36 participants with healthy eyes, the samples was collected using a sterile cotton wool swab before and during swimming and then transported to the laboratory within four to six hours of collection for analysis.Data obtained from the study was analyzed using the statistical package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24.0. Descriptive statistics of variables was presented using frequency, percentage, multivariate and student T -test. In this study, a total of 27 samples were collected from 9 willing participants who gave their consent they were of different age and gender. These comprised of five males (55.6%) and four females (44.4%), the minimum age of these participant was 23 while the maximum was 28. The observations of this study showed a significant association (P<0.001) between 0 hour and 2 hours of contact lens wear, 2 hours and 4 hour of contact lens wear was also significant at (P=0.001) and 0 hour and 4 hours of contact lens wear was significant at (P<0.001). Using the Pairwsie comparison to compare the samples at various hour of contact lens wear. This study would adequately guide eye care practitioners in ascertaining the pattern of resistance of bacteria associated with the conjunctiva of contact lens wearers and to determine the most effective antibiotic therapy for them.
