ABSTRACT
This essay examines the art of gothic fiction using two novels rich in gothic elements namely Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto and Beckford’s Vathek. The essay focused on the interpretation of gothic features which is peculiar to the gothic genre . The study employed the qualitative research method, relying on textual analysis to delineate the message. The theory used in the research is formalist theory, that uses art elements to interpret the message embedded in the novels. The findings shows that gothic fiction employs elements of fear and fantasy to create the milieu of terror in the mind of readers. This research reveals the pungent part of human aspect that gothicism brings to light. It concludes that gothicism helps condemn the lethal desires in man to correct it.
