SUMMARY
This study examines the origin of the Arab Israeli crisis, the conflict between Israeli Jews and Palestinian Arabs is fundamentally a struggle over land, over who is to reside in, own, and possess sovereignty over the territory that is variously called Palestine and Israel. The conflict which is regarded as the most protracted and intractable conflict of our time, defined along the competing political, religious, territorial and national claims of two communities over one land. The causes of the Arab-Israeli crisis: Zionism; Balfour Declaration of 1917; the post-World War; Six Million Dead; heavy anti-Semitism; United Nations vote for the Partition Plan; Declaration of the State of Israel and Arab countries invasion. Prior to 1948, the conflict concerned the entire 10,000 square mile area of Palestine as defined in the 1922 League of Nations Mandate, but since 1967, the conflict has been focused on the remaining 22% of the area that was not incorporated into the state of Israel as delimited in the 1949 armistice agreements. Anyone familiar with this conflict knows that more than land is at stake. In November 1947, the United Nations (UN) voted to partition the British Mandate of Palestine into a Jewish state and an Arab state. Clashes broke out almost immediately between Jews and Arabs in Palestine. As British troops prepared to withdraw from Palestine, conflict continued to escalate, with both Jewish and Arab forces committing belligerences. Among the most infamous events was the attack on the Arab village of Dayr Yāsīn on April 9, 1948. The news of a brutal massacre there by Irugun Zvai Leumi and the Dayr Yasin forces spread widely and inspired both panic and retaliation. Days later, Arab forces attacked a Jewish convoy headed for Hadassah Hospital, killing 78.
