ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to examine the application of audiovisual aids and the extent of use of audiovisual materials in teaching and learning chemistry in senior secondary school in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The study was carried out to ascertain whether there is an adequate availability of audio visual aids for the teaching of chemistry in senior secondary school, their effectiveness in enhancing learning outcomes of chemistry in senior secondary school, and the various challenges that hinder their optimal use in teaching of chemistry in senior secondary school in Ovia North East local government area. The population of the study comprises four thousand eight hundred and six (4806) Senior secondary School students and twenty chemistry teachers. In determining the sample size, the sample was conveniently selected using simple random sampling technique, and four (4) schools were randomly selected for the study, twenty five (25) students from each school were selected and 20 teachers making it a total of 120 as the sample size. Six research questions were formulated and a self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. Validation of the instrument was face validity. Validation was made by experts from The University of Benin in Edo State. The questionnaires were administered to the students and chemistry teachers and were collected by the researcher. The reliability of the instrument was tested using Cronbach's Alpha with the result 0.9 which shows that the instrument was reliable. The data were analysed using mean for research questions and t test calculation for testing the hypothesis. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of audiovisual aids in teaching chemistry to senior secondary school students. The findings showed that these aids indeed enhance understanding and engagement. However, their implementation varies widely across schools due to several obstacles, including: ● Limited budgets to purchase modern audiovisual equipment ● Insufficient training for teachers to effectively integrate these aids into their lessons ● Inadequate maintenance of the equipment, leading to technical issues ● A shortage of up-to-date audiovisual resources The study emphasizes the importance of addressing these challenges through strategic investments in teacher training and resource development. By doing so, schools can unlock the full potential of audiovisual aids, leading to a more interactive and effective learning experience for chemistry students.
