THE ANTIOXIDANT EFFECT OF ALSTONIA BOONEI ROOT-BARK EXTRACT AGAINST CHLORHEXIDINE IN SURGICAL SKIN PREPARATION

ABSTRACT

The aim of the study is to determine the antiseptic effect of Alstoniaboonei extract in surgical skin preparation in albino rats. Twenty albino rats were randomly distributed into five groups of four rats each. Group A (control) was given only distilled water, group B was given Chlorhexidine-Alcohol, 15 mg/kg, 30 mg/kg, 60mg/kg of Alstoniaboonei extracts were given to group C, D, E respectively. Blood sample was collected from the albino rat and kept in lithium-heparin anti-coagulant sample bottles. Blood serum after centrifugation was analyzed for Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) activities. The MDA result showed that the mean values increased from 0.33 ± 0.01(nmol/L) in group B treated with Chlorhexidine-Alcohol to 0.76±0.01 (nmol/L) in group D that was treated with 30mg/kg of A. boonei extract. While the SOD mean value increased from 17.53±0.35 (u/g tissue) in group C that was treated with 15mg/kg A. boonei extract to 20.03±0.93 (ug/ tissue) in group B treated with Chlorhexidine-Alcohol. The study showed that A. boonei has antiseptic properties and can be used as an alternative for surgical skin preparation. The most effective concentration was 60mg/kg which significantly kept the SOD nearest to the Normal group when compared with other concentrations. In general Chlorhexidine-Alcohol was a better antiseptic when compared with all the concentrations of A. boonei from both MDA and SOD experiments. There was a highly significant difference between the various concentrations in both experiments (p < 0.001).
