ABSTRACT
Eucalyptus camaldulensis is commonly known as river red gum. It is found in New Zealand, Australia, Nigeria and several other tropical forests in the world. This plant is commonly used in as local medicine for various health disease including diabetes and is readily available in Nigeria. This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of the leaves of Eucalyptus camaldulensis on urea and creatinine levels in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. 20 female albino wistar rats were randomly divided into 4 groups 5 rats each. for a group. Group 1and 2 were induced with streptozotocin (STZ), group 3 and 4 served as the normal control. Group 1 animals were treated with eucalyptus extracts (1ml of 10% w/v), administered daily for 14 days. At the end of the study duration based on the statistics obtained, it was observed that there was a gradual reduction in urea and creatinine levels, in the Eucalyptus camaldulensis treated rats, when compared to the diabetic control.
