ABSTRACT
Rapid population growth and urbanization has resulted in poor environmental condition in most urban settlements in Benin City, Edo State. Solid waste disposal in particular has become a daunting task for the state government even though greater portions of internally generated funds of the government go into waste management. The streets are still littered with rubbish which makes them breeding ground for some insects. This study investigated the abundance of insects in some selected refuse dumps in Benin City, Edo State. These refuse dumps were located at Oba Market, By-pass (Akure Benin road), Government Residential Area (GRA) (Guobadia street etete) and Eyaen (Ezemede Emma street) which served as the reference site.
The methodology applied included using sticky traps which was made of wood for trapping small insects, the water traps made of blue buckets for trapping crawling insects and sweep net which was used for collecting flying insects at the different locations of the refuse dumps.
The results showed that Diptera has the highest abundance of insects from the different dumpsites with 74.02% at By-pass station, 67.74% at Oba Market station and 57.52% at G.R.A station with the least abundant been Lepidoptera with none collected at Oba market station, 0.71% at By-pass station and 1% at G.R.A station. The most abundant individual was Anopheles gambiae with 306 individuals found which was followed by Musca domestica with 238 individuals found while the least abundant specie was Heliconiinae acraea with just 3 individuals found. The results from the present study shows that insect vectors of pathogens are prevalent in Benin City metropolis and therefore proper disposal of refuse dumps is hereby recommended
