SUMMARY
This research work examined the historical background of Boko Haram, its economic impact on Nigeria and the different strategies employed by the Nigerian government in stopping the menace of Boko Haram. Based on the finding from this work, there are evidence that Boko Haram insurgence have a negative effect on the economic development of Nigeria. The dangerous dimension and insecurity challenge posed by the fundamentalist group has heightened fear among Nigerian populace. The trend has led to incessant suicide bombings and all sorts of attacks in the northern parts of the country with little or no provocation. Consequently lives and properties are lost, businesses ventures and shops have remained closed especially in the north. Most regrettably, the people of southern Nigeria who are the life-wire of economic activities in the north are relocating in large numbers to their states of origin to avoid losing their lives in the hands of the sects. The presence of insecurity caused by the Boko Haram sects constitutes threat to lives and properties, hinders business activities and discourages local and foreign investors, all of which stifles and retards socio-economic development of the country. In addition to the various strategies employed by the government in tackling the menace of Boko Haram which is a key for making headway, the Nigerian government should take the following steps for battling the religious fundamentalist sect: Revive the regional coalition Abuja must revamp its alliance with Benin, chad, Niger and Cameroon. This coalition and its Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) against Boko Haram had worked effectively until it was 82 weakened by chad’s withdrawal in October 2017 of the hundreds of troops in Niger. Nigeria has a huge opportunity here to show leadership in Africa, which is struggling with extremist violence and identity conflicts from all angles. Reviving the MNJTF is essential to ensure continued hard hitting military pressure on Boko Haram
