ABSTRACT
This research work focuses on the various registers employed by The Nigerian Police Force in carrying out their day to day Police activities. Police Officers tend to make use of various codes to facilitate the communication of quick and coded information comprising generally of abbreviations, phonetic alphabets, telegraphic codes and some others. These codes are used in various contexts of their communication systems which are mostly determined by the investigation or operation they are engaged in. The gap that this work intends to fill is the bridge of understanding in communication between The Nigeria Police Force and the public. This work aims to unveil the creativity of the Police Force in the use of Language and to aid in reducing the gap of communication between the public and the Police Force.
The method of collecting data was through oral interview and direct observation. In the course of collecting data for this work, oral interviews were done with some Police Officers of the force that were recorded while some interviews that were not granted recording permission was done with the use of pencil and paper.The theoretical framework used for this work is the descriptive theoretical framework which states that we try to explain things the way they actually are, not as we wish them to be.
The major finding from this work was that the Nigeria Police Force is very creative in their use of language and they make us of a morphological derivational process called abbreviation and also have have a phonetic alphabet. They employ symbols and most of all their form of language is a variety of the English language.
