ABSTRACT
Temperature is an important element of climate which also influence other climatic elements. The rise in temperature brings about global warming and consequently climate change. This study aims to examine the temperature trends as a determinant of climate change in three Nigerian cities of Abuja, Sokoto and Port Harcourt. Annual and monthly temperature data from 1985 to 2023 was retrieved from the achives of the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET), Abuja. The data was analzed using trend analysis. The result revealed an increasing trend in the three cities with mean temperature of 28.30C, 27.30C and 27.20C for Sokoto, Abuja and Port Harcourt respectively. Temperature values is observed to be in its highest every February to May for Sokoto, and January to May for Abuja and Port Harcourt. The highest temperature in Sokoto is 300C in 2018, Abuja with 280C in 2014 and 2015 and Port Harcourt with 27.80C in 2010. The temperature pattern observed in this study could be attributed to global warming and consequently climate change. Therefore efforts should be made towards mitigating climate change in Nigeria.
