TEACHING TECHNIQUES OF ECONOMICS AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN EGOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study investigated teaching techniques of Economics and academic performance of students in secondary schools in Egor local government area of Edo state. Four research questions were raised to guide the study namely what are the Teaching Techniques available for teaching Economics in Senior Secondary  Schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State? which of these techniques does a teacher use when teaching Economics in Senior Secondary Schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State? which of these techniques is most appropriate in teaching Economics that enhance academic performance in Senior Secondary Schools in Egor Local Government area of Edo State and are there teaching materials available for teaching Economics that will increase academic performance of Students in Senior Secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State? The study will be significant to the Government in such a way that it will show the areas where it has to come in, such as providing the necessary materials that will aid effective teaching process of Economics. The study adopted the descriptive research design, the population of the study comprised of 115 teachers from 27 public Senior Secondary School teachers in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State, the sample size comprised of 56 teachers (50%) of teachers from 10 public senior secondary schools in the study area. The questionnaire was used in gathering information from the respondents; the data collected from the instrument administered were quantitatively analyzed through descriptive statistics such as frequency, mean and simple percentage Findings revealed that Discussion and Demonstrative Techniques is the Teaching Technique used in Senior Secondary Schools in Egor Local Government Area. It was also revealed that Discussion and Demonstrative teaching techniques are the ones teacher used when teaching Economic in the study area. Based on the findings, it was recommended that Teachers should adopt discussion and demonstration teaching techniques as against other teaching techniques which has been shown in finding to contribute to low academic achievement in Economics.
