ABSTRACT
This study examined the teaching methods and academic performance of junior secondary school students in Ikpoba-Okha local government Area of Edo state. The specific objectives were to determine the extent to which the teaching method influences students’ academic performance, find out the level of students’ academic performance, ascertain the relationship between teaching methods and students’ academic performance, investigate if there is a difference in the relationship between the junior secondary schools in Ikpoba-Okha local government area based on school location, and find out if there is a difference in the relationship between the junior secondary schools in Ikpoba-Okha local government area based on school size.
The study adopted a descriptive survey research using the correlational design. The data collected was analyzed using frequency count, simple percentage, mean (𝒙̅), standard deviation (SD), Pearson product moment correlation coefficient and Fisher Z transformation statistics. The findings from the study revealed that teaching methods influence students’ academic performance in public junior secondary schools in Ikpoba-Okha local government Area of Edo State to a high extent, the level of students’ Academic performance in public junior secondary schools in Ikpoba-Okha local government Area of Edo State is low, there is no significant relationship between teaching methods and students’ academic performance in public junior secondary schools in Ikpoba-Okha local government Area of Edo state, there is no significant difference in the relationship between teaching methods and students’ academic performance in junior secondary schools based on school location, and there is no significant difference in the relationship between teaching methods of students’ academic performance in public junior secondary schools based on school size.
The study recommended that school management should set up a mechanism to ensure that all teachers employs appropriate teaching methods that will stimulate and enhance students’ learning outcome, government should also make sure all the necessary academic needs of students are provided, more so, that that strict supervision are put in place in order to foster and facilitate better students’ academic performance, and government should also ensure that effective teaching methods, particularly the ones that are practically and theoretically oriented are being used such that better students’ academic performance in junior secondary schools will be attained.
