This study is designed to investigate the prospects and challenges of teaching English language in Nigerian schools, for the survey, five (5) research questions were stated for verification. Five(5) schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area were randomly selected to which two hundred (200) students were used as samples for the Study.
The instrument used for the collection of data is the questionnaire, it is being administered to two hundred (200) students from 5 selected schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo state. The data gathered is analyzed using simple percentage. The reliability and validity of the questionnaire is also tested to ensure it test what it is meant to measure.
From the analysis and results gotten, it is observed that qualification, use if instructional materials, class size and mother tongue interference are some of the prospects and challenges in teaching English language in Nigerian schools.
