ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to examine influence of teachers qualification on student academic performance in History in some selected school in Ovia North East LGA Edo State. The study determined the predominant educational qualification of History teachers, the level of academic performance of students in History and if there is a significant relationship between teacher’s qualification and students academic performance in public secondary schools.
The population of this study consists of JSS 3 students in the twenty-eight (28) Public Junior Secondary Schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State with a total of 1, 284 (one thousand, two hundred and eighty four) students. The sample of 100 students was used in this study and they were drawn from four randomly selected public secondary schools. Data obtained from the questionnaire administered was analyzed using percentage, mean statistics and standard deviation.
The findings from the research revealed that teachers with SSCE as qualification should not be the predominant educational qualification of History teachers in public secondary, there is a high level of academic performance in both private and public secondary schools in History and there is a significant relationship between teachers qualification and students academic performanceBased on the findings it was recommended that Teachers‟ Registration Council of Nigeria should introduce tests and examinations for teachers at regular intervals.
