TEACHER'S COMPETENCE AND STUDENT'S ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE: A CASE STUDY OF SOME SELECTED SCHOOLS IN OVIA NORTH EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The study examined "The Relationship between Teacher's competence and Student's Academic performance in English language of secondary school students". It investigated the cause of students poor performance in English. The design of the study is a descriptive survey. Three (3) research questions were raised to guide this study. The population of the study consisted of seventy (70) SS1 students from two secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area. The sampling technique used is the simple-random sampling technique. The instrument for the study is a fifteen (15) item questionnaire titled "Examining the Relationship between Teacher Competence and Student performance in English Education in Ovia North East LGA". The data was collected through a validated questionnaire. The method of data analysis was simple percentage method. The findings of the study revealed that students generally perform poorly in English language assessments. This is because the curriculum for English language learning is outdated and does not meet the needs of students. This study also revealed that large class sizes makes it difficult to provide individualized attention in English class. However, the study recommends that smaller class sizes should be implemented in order to provide individualized attention to students in class. Also, Educator and those involved in creating the curriculum should ensure that a relevant and up-to-date curriculum for English language is created. Finally the Government and school administrators should introduce a more interactive and communicative approach to English language teaching.
