ABSTRACT
The study focused on Teachers’ Characteristics and Students’ Academic Performance in Public Secondary School in Edo North Senatorial District of Edo State. The purpose of the study was to determine how teachers’ characteristics influence students’ academic performance in schools. In order to carry out the study, seven research questions were raised, two (2) research questions were answered directly while five (5) hypotheses formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. A descriptive survey research design that employed ex-posto-facto design. The population of the study consisted of 2818 teachers, 173 principals and 173 public secondary schools. A sample of 564 teachers, 35 principals and 35 schools were used for the study was selected through simple random sampling. The research instrument used for the study was a structure questionnaire titled. Teachers’ Characteristics and Students’ Academic Performance Checklist (TCSAPC). The data collected from the respondents were subjected to statistical analysis which is descriptive statistics (percentage) and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Statistical Analysis. The result of study reveal that the students’ academic performance is below average and there was a significant relationship between teachers’ characteristics (age, sex, teaching style, experience and qualification) on students’ academic performance in public secondary school in Edo South Senatorial District of Edo State. Based on the findings it was recommended that there should be consistency in professional development among teachers must be considered as vital to the sustenance of quality education in Nigeria and the State Ministry of Education should make more effort in the inspection and monitoring of school to ensure that teachers stay in the job during school hours.
