Abstract
This study investigated Teachers and Students Perceptions of Problems of Effective teaching and learning of English language. The purpose of the study was to find out the common practice and behavior of students in engaging in English materials and activities; to investigate how students and teachers see the involvement of technology and individualized learning in shaping the future of English language; to examine the attitude of students towards the relevance and the importance of English language.
The design of the study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population of the study consist of 20 public schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo state , with the total population of 6000 students. Simple random sampling technique was adopted with a total number of 50 students. The research instrument used for the study was questionnaire. The questionnaire was divided into two sections. “Section A” was designed to generate personal information of the respondent. While the “Section B” comprises of items on the topic under research. It was constructed with care to reflect the problem of the study such that the items will be relevant to the purpose of the study. The instruments was reviewed and certified by the project supervisor and two other experts in the Department of Educational Foundation, Faculty of Education in University of Benin.
The findings of this study revealed challenges identified by teachers such as limited resources, diverse student needs, and the need for innovative instructional approaches; the students expressed concerns about motivation, language anxiety and difficulties in applying English language skills in real-life contexts. It was recommended that schools should allocate sufficient resources such as; textbooks, multimedia materials to support English language instruction in educational institutions . implement student-centered instructional approaches , such as project-based learning and task-based learning to promote active engagement and meaningful language practice.
