TAXONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS AND PROFILING OF SELECTED RAINFOREST TREE SPECIES IN OGBA ZOOLOGICAL GARDEN, BENIN CITY, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This project conducted a comprehensive assessment and profiling of tropical rainforest species within the confines of Ogba Zoo and Nature Park, situated in Benin City. The study focused on identifying and classifying species primarily utilizing a systematic approach. Species identification was facilitated through the implementation of a field guide equipped with keys for accurate classification. In conjunction with taxonomic classification, the conservation status of each species was evaluated utilizing the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Of the 39 species assessed, 4 species are Vulnerable, 2 Near threatened, 1 Critically endangered, 2 Endangered ,13 Not Evaluated, and 17 in the Least concern threshold according to the IUCN red list of endangered species. This assessment provides insight into the conservation priorities and urgency for species within the study area and by categorizing species according to their conservation thresholds, valuable information was obtained to inform conservation strategies and management practices within Ogba Zoo and Nature Park. The project serves as a crucial contribution to the understanding and preservation of biodiversity within tropical rainforest ecosystems, particularly in the context of a designated conservation area. The findings offer a foundation for further research, conservation efforts, and sustainablemanagement practices aimed at safeguarding the rich biodiversity present in Ogba Zoo and Nature Park.
