TABOO MOTIVATED LEXICAL LOSS IN EDO

ABSTRACT

          This research is on the taboo motivated lexical loss in Edo. Lexical loss is a common linguistic phenomenon, it is usually preceded by lexical replacement. This study is posed to investigate lexical loss in Edo. Lexical loss can be influenced or determined by many factors some of which are non linguistic, however, this research is interested in those lexical in Edo caused (motivated) by the taboo nature of the words. Taboo words in this research refer to those words that are residing as a result of their restricted use in the language community. This research investigates the phenomenon of lexical items. This it does by seeking the responses of the Edo native speakers both in the urban and in the rural areas of the language communities. Also, the research is posed to examine as well as state the various euphemistic expressions used instead of the taboo words in the language.

          This study consists of four chapters, chapter one is on the general introduction of the research topic. Also the purpose of this study research methodology and usefulness of the study stated. Relevant literature and conceptual review are done in the second chapter of the study. Chapter three is on the data presentation and analysis while chapter four is on summary and conclusions of the study on the taboo motivated lexical loss in Edo.
