ABSTRACT
Latent fingerprint are fingerprint patterns made by the ridges and valleys of a finger, they are not easily visible, and they require special technique to make them visible. Latent fingerprint development is an important technique in forensic science; it is used to identify criminals and victims. The use of Silica nanoparticles is a promising alternative for the development of latent fingerprint because of their good coating ability; good sensitivity and they can be used on a wide range of surfaces. Other method could be destructive to the fingerprints and have low sensitivity.
This aim of this study is to synthesize Silica nanoparticles from date seeds (Phoenix dactylifera) for latent fingerprint development. Date seeds are a cheap and abundant source of Silica and they can be extracted by using simple chemical means. The performance of Silica nanoparticles for development of latent fingerprints will be tested on various non-porous surfaces such as glass, plastic and stainless steel.
The Silica nanoparticles synthesized was compared with commercial fingerprint powder and the impressions were rated based on their minutiae like the ridge endings and bifurcations. The lowest visibility was found on Glass surface with Stainless steel giving the highest visibility of the fingerprint development.
