ABSTRACT
The demand for water as a result of the growing human population has necessitated the exploration of new methods of treating wastewater for use. This study assessed abattoir wastewater treatment for nutrient removal using sawdust-mycelium composite. Fungal species used in the study were Pleurotus ostreatus and Ganoderma lucidum . The best pH value was 5.41±0.02 recorded after treatment with a combination of Oyster and Garnoderma. TDS concentrations was lowest in the sample treated with uninoculated sawdust with a recorded value of 748.02±0.04 mg/l. Electrical conductivity removal efficiency was best in the sample treated with inoculated sawdust with a recorded value of 1498.02±0.02 µS/cm. Treatment with oyster and Garnoderma was able to reduce the nitrogen concentration from 314.09±0.07 mg/l in the untreated sample to 111.51±0.02 mg/l. Treatment with oyster and Garnoderma was able to reduce the nitrate concentration from 114.31±0.07 mg/l in the untreated sample to 70.82±0.02 mg/l. Treatment with oyster and Garnoderma was also able to reduce the nitrite concentration from 0.47±0.07 mg/l in the untreated sample to 0.285±0.02 mg/l. The sample treated with uninoculated sawdust had the lowest concentration of iron with value of 1.14±0.02 mg/l. In conclusion, the combination of oyster and ganoderma was effective in the reduction of pollutants in the abattoir wastewater.
