ABSTRACT
The study aimed at examine the survey of tense errors In English language Essay writing of Senior Secondary School Students. Three research questions were raised to guide the study. The purpose of this study was to identify the common type of tense errors In the Essays of Senior Secondary School 2 Students, to identify the frequency of tense errors present in the English Essays of Senior Secondary School 2 Students , and find out how the level of Vocabulary proficiency among Senior Secondary School 2 Students correlates with the frequency of tense errors In their essays In the course of this study, the descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study consists of 4,025 Senior Secondary school 2 Students with a sample size of 120 Senior Secondary School 2 Students. An essay test was used as the instrument for data collection. The instrument was validated by the researchers supervisor and an English language expert before administration. Data from the test scripts were presented in tables and were analysed using frequencies and simple percentage. The finding of the study reveals that Senior Secondary School 2 Students struggle with the use of base verbs when conjugating for different tenses, they struggle to change the base words to the appropriate verb tense needed for their sentences. The students also struggled to maintain consistency in their tense usage. They formed past tense verbs wrongly and failed to use correctly formed past tense verbs properly in a sentence. The study also reveals that there is a negative correlation between the Vocabulary proficiency of the Students and the frequency of their tense errors. The study recommended that students should engage in more extensive reading to enhance their understanding and application of grammar rules, including the correct use of tenses. Teachers should also adopt more practical and engaging instructional approaches to teaching tenses and Vocabulary. The school management should support and facilitate the development of a robust reading culture within the school.
