ABSTRACT
The introduction and establishment of attractive plant species into new environments frequently has unforeseen ecological effects. A rising worry in Nigeria is the spread of ornamental invasive plant species, which have the potential to harm biodiversity, alter ecological processes, and disturb local ecosystems. This study shows the invasive status of some ornamental plant species introduced in three gardens around the University of Benin. About ten or more ornamental plants were recorded in each garden namely; Santua Gardens, Hopewell Foundation Garden and Dreams gardens all located at Ugbowo, Benin City. Basic information i.e the common names of the plants were provided by each garden curator. The result showed that each garden had at least two(2) invasive plants cultivated in them, which were introduced due to their aesthetic values. This study also highlights impacts and preventive measures and solutions of tackling invasive plant species should they ever escape into surrounding regions.
