ABSTRACT
The aim of this studies was to determine the suitability of Oluku Lateritic Soil as a borrowed pit material. The soil is naturally abundant in the community due to its geographical location. Borrowed pit materials are expected to exhibit some geotechnical properties in terms of strength and good resistance to load so as to perform effectively the purpose for which they are being imported and incorporated into the construction material. This can only assured of through proper analysis of the soil samples under standard laboratory conditions.
In this study, different geotechnical tests such as the Sieve Analysis, Specific Gravity, the Atterberg’s Limits and the Compaction tests were carried out so as to ascertain the true geotechnical state of the materials. Standard laboratory equipment and tools were used as provided in the laboratory. All the tests were carried out in accordance with the provision of the British Standard as provided in BS 1377(1990 edition).
The results obtained from the tests and analyzed showed the particle size of the soil is less than 0.002 which shows that it is true lateritic with little clay content. The Specific Gravity of the soil samples ranged from 0.6320 to 0.6792 with an average value of 0.6556. The average Liquid Limit of the samples was obtained as 24.14, the average Plastic Limit was obtained as 16.09 while the average Plasticity Index was obtained as 8.07%. The Maximum Dry Density of the samples ranged from 0.7gcm-3 to 2.0gcm-3 with an average value of 1.35 gcm-3. The Optimum Moisture Content of the soil samples at 25 blows was found to range from 8.0% to 16% with an average value of 12%.
