ABSTRACT
The current study was done to estimate the sub-chronic toxicity of aqueous extract of polyherbal formulation on Total cholesterol, Triglycerides, HDL-Cholesterol, LDL- cholesterol and VLDL cholesterol in albino rats. twenty-five male rats were randomized into five different groups of 5 animals each and were separately administered 250, 500, 1000 and 2000 mg/kg polyherbal formulation orally for 21 days. Blood samples were collected for hematological and biochemical analyses. Lipid profile analyses was done. There was a significant increase in total cholesterol activity in the group administered 500mg/kg compared to the control, and the animals administered 250mg/kg, 1000mg/kg and 2000mg/kg showed no significant difference in the total cholesterol activity in the rats. A significant decrease in high density lipo-protein activity in the groups administered 250mg/kg, 500mg/kg and 2000mg/kg compared to the control was observed, and the animals administered 1000mg/kg showed no significant difference in the high density lipo-protein activity in the rats. There were also significant difference in triglycerides activity in the group administered 250mg/kg, 500mg/kg, 1000mg/kg and 2000mg/kg compared to the control in triglycerides activity in the rats. A significant difference in low-density lipo-protien activity in the animals administered 250mg/kg and 500mg/kg compared to the control was seen, and the animals administered 1000mg/kg and 2000mg/kg showed no significant differences in low-density lipoprotien activity in the rats. Finally, a significant increase in Very -low density lipo-protein activity in the animals administered 2000mg/kg compared to the control, and the group administered 250mg/kg, 500mg/kg and 1000mg/kg showed slight difference in the high density lipo-protein activity in the rats.
