ABSTRACT
Among different cultural groups especially in Africa, morphological parts of Detarium microcarpum are used for both local and medicinal purposes in treatment of various ailments because of the biological activity of its phytochemical constituents. This study was carried out to determine the possible toxic effects associated with the use of fractions of Detarium microcarpum on the electrolyte status of male wistar mice. Following the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) protocol, three groups of eight (8) mice per group were administered carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) only, 250mg/kg and 500mg/kg body weight of dichloromethane fraction of Detarium microcarpum respectively for fourteen days. The administration of 250mg/kg and 500mg/kg body weight doses of the plant fraction caused a significant decrease in the serum concentration of sodium and bicarbonate ions and an increase in chloride ions when compared to the control group as well as a significant decrease in the weights of the animals. The use of Detarium microcarpum is relatively non toxic but may affect the functioning of the kidneys when used for a longer period.
