ABSTRACT

In this study, the inhibitive effect of Ipomoea aquatica leaf extract on corrosion of mild steel in acidic media was determined. The qualitative phytochemical analysis of the methanolic leaf extract of Ipomoea aquatica revealed the presence of secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, saponins, tannins, phenolic compounds. Also the inhibitory effects of Ipomoea aquatica leaf extract on the corrosion of mild steel in 1.5M sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and 1.5M hydrochloric acid (HCL) solution was studied at different temperatures. Corrosion rates were found to increase as temperature increases, but decreased in the presence of the extract when compared to the control. Inhibition frequency increased with the increase in inhibitor concentration reaching 82% for mild steel at 303OK in the presence of 0.5g/l concentration of Ipomoea aquatica extract The study therefore suggests the use of Ipomoea aquatica leaf extract as an anti-corrosion substance in mild steel industries.
