STUDY ON THE COMPARISON OF THE COMBINATORIAL EFFECTS OF SHEA – BUTTER

ABSTRACT 

Trachoma is the world’s leading infectious cause of blindness, and is part of a group of conditions known as neglected tropical diseases (often referred to as NTDs). This study aims to determine the efficiency of Shea butter, coconut and aloe vera oils in the remediation of corneal inflammations and infections. Twenty (20) rabbits were used for research work which were divided into four groups with five rabbit in each. Group A, was treated with Shea butter and coconut oil, Group B, treatment with Shea butter and Aloe vera oil, and Group C, a combination of all the oils. With Group D the definitive control treated with sterile water. Using MannWhitney test, the three groups were statistically significant with (p < 0.05), Thereafter using Krustal-Wallis to compare the treatment effect from the independent groups shows no statistically significant difference in the day 5 treatment of the groups ( A-C) with p values ranging from 0.368, 0.311 and 0.280. Data collected from this study were statistically represented using tables, chats, and descriptive statistics. And were analyzed using the statistical package for social sciences version 22(SPSS). The result showed that Shea butter in combination with the oils presents other options for Eye care practitioners in treatment and management of trachoma and inflammation.
