STUDY HABIT AS A CORRELATE OF ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE.

ABSTRACT

The study investigated Study Habits as a Correlate of Academic Performance of Students in Public Secondary Schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The main purpose of the study was to investigate Study Habit as a Correlate of Academic Performance of Students Public Secondary Schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. Seven (7) research questions were raised, three (3) were answered and four (4) hypothesized and tested at 0.05 significant level.

The population of the study composed of all the students in the fourteen (14) public secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo state and the sample size of the study was two hundred (200) respondents from 5 public secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. A test structured questionnaire titled Study Habits and Academic Performance of Students Questionnaire (SHAPSQ) was used to collect data, the reliability of the instrument was carried out using Cronbach Alpha and a coefficient of 0.78 was obtained. Data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency count, mode and pearson – moment coefficient correlation statistics to test the hypothesis at 0.05 significant level

The findings of the study revealed a significant positive correlation between study habits and academic performance of students in public secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, the study therefore recommended that schools should prioritize the development of effective study habits among students and provide resources and also support to help them achieve this goal. Also, teachers should incorporate study skills training into their teaching practices and provide opportunities for students to practice and reinforce good study habits. Parents and guardians should encourage and support their children in developing good study habits.
