ABSTRACT

The field of mass communication has continued to experience expansion since its inception marked by shifts in trends with the introduction of new technological devices. Hence, Journalism has taken different forms, with the introduction of social media. Information sharing and political participation has also taken a new dimension, with students and youths being at the forefront of information sharing and political participation. This study was carried out to find out the extent students use social media as tool for democratic citizenship, the impact of student generated content on public discourse, democratic processes and information consumption. The study was anchored on Technology determinisms theory, using survey method for data collection to uncover the potential benefits and challenges associated with students’ use of social media in the realm of democratic citizenship. The study reveals Twitter as one of the most sought social media platforms for student engagement in political discourse, student also participate in politics through online campaign, online petition, hashtag activism etc. using social media. This research work offers insights into the strategies and best practices for policy makers, stakeholders and educators to harness the positive potential of social media platforms in nurturing informed, active and responsible citizens capable of contributing meaningfully to democratic processes and discourse.
